flutist mark alban lotz and bassist meinrad kneer document the ongoing improvised music series they started in utrecht 2007 with u-ex(perimental), which features them anchoring 26 bracing tracks with a slew of dutch guests including bassoonist dana jessen, trumpeter felicity provan and singer han buhrs, among others. the core duo have a clear rapport and sonic identity marking their abstract improvisations with a frictive astringency, which their disparate array of guests easily fit within.

although free improvisation likely harks back to the paleolithic, the modern non-idiomatic form was first recorded in the mid-’60s, the unruly offspring of jazz and avant-garde classical music. seminal figures included webern-loving u.k. guitarist derek bailey, who avoided fixed groups in favour of jumbling diverse musicians for one-off happenings. his annual company festivals tossed unrelated genres together, their overall results less important than the struggle for exhilarating moments of unclassifiable cohesion sprung from unpredictable combinations.

fast forward 50 years, and free improv vibrates in virtually every ville. montreal teems with activity, a longstanding tradition nourished by weekly series like the cagibi’s mardi spaghetti and mercredimusics at the casa obscura. but for every obvious hotbed of london, new york and tokyo, strong scenes persist in lesser-known locales like beirut, lisbon and rimouski.

utrecht also harbours a thriving scene, led by flautist mark lotz and bassist meinrad kneer who have presented over 120 concerts since 2007. u-ex(perimental) is an exemplary free improv studio recording that documents 13 dutch musicians.

with lotz and kneer appearing throughout (lotz lays out on one track), bass and flute textures predominate. while kneer tends to bow thick, continuous textures, the flute playing relies more on extended techniques, from breath to pops to trilling lines. improvised music is always dependent on local circumstances, and in this case the tiny studio precluded piano and drums. this left voice, guitars, laptop, strings and woodwinds.

the cd includes 26 miniatures, ranging from one to five minutes, from duos to sextet. while company’s mix ‘n’ match formula is retained, certain subgroupings are given more space than others. for example, the trio of lotz, kneer and yedo gibson on sax appear on six tracks, while koenraad ecker’s laptop appears just once. well-known participants included the icp’s mary oliver and the astronotes’ joost buis, although younger musicians are also featured.

there are no belly flops in this coherent and deep pool of music. the short durations drown any notions of toe-dipping; plunging-in is the only option. highlights include the frantic “blitzfish” with jodi gilbert on vocals, splashing in and out in 1:03, and the eely slides of the sextet in “beach life.”

  • eyal hareuveni, 28 november 2012, allaboutjazz.com

in 2009, dutch flautist mark alban lotz and bassist meinrad kneer initiated a monthly creative music series, titled u-ex(perimental), at centraal museum in utrecht, presenting performances of spontaneous free improvisations. after about 120 concerts lotz and kneer decided to document some of these unique musical meetings in a tiny studio in amsterdam—so tiny that there was no place for a drum set or piano.

the recording features improvisation in different formats, from duets to sextet, with musicians from the established and multinational dutch improv scene, but also introducing some proponents of a new generation with careful and equal representation to women improvisers. obviously, these improvisations vary in dynamics, temperament, color, timbral variation, usage of extended techniques and invention. all the improvisations are brief and seek to outline a musical idea with no attachment to further interplay.

the improvisations are sequenced in order to create a cohesive, uniting narrative. the minimalist chamber, "hold" introduces the uplifting and playful "rondo" that is summarized by lotz and kneer in "conclusion." then a new chapter begins when the two are challenged by the otherworldly sounds from koenraad ecker's laptop, followed by another experimental improvisation, with saxophonist yedo gibson, who employs extended breathing techniques.

the improvisations with vocal artist han buhrs on "punch," "the mammal thing" and "pow wow," and jodi gilbert on "blitzfish" and the song "for albert hofmann"—the swiss scientist who synthesized the psychedelic effects of lysergic acid diethylamideare (lsd)— are the wildest and most inventive ones, using invented languages with humor. lotz and kneer, with trumpeter felicity provan and lap steel guitarist joost buis, create a similar vocal effect on the ironic "aria" and "recitative."

a fascinating journey with some of the most unique improvisers on the fertile dutch scene.

in 2007, flautist mark alban lotz paired up with doublebassist meinrad kneer to launch an improvised music concert series in his home town of utrecht. later, in december 2009 and february 2010, they booked two days in a tiny studio where they invited some of the musicians featured in their series. the results are culled on u-ex(perimental), a cd featuring 11 guests (though there are no more than four musicians playing on a given track) in the course of 26 short free improvisations – two clock in over 4 minutes, most are only vignettes. i usually don’t like this kind of short attention span comp, but a lot of thought went into the track order, and it makes for a very enjoyable listen. lotz and kneer are first-rate improvisers, and their guests aren’t bad either. especially trumpeter felicity provan, vocalist han buhrs (of palinckx), and joost buis who, surprisingly, came to the sessions with his lapsteel guitar instead of his trombone.

  • herman te loo, october 2012, jazzflits.nl

pianist albert van veenendaal and saxophonist esmée olthuis made four years ago the cd ‘the mystery of guests’ for the evil rabbit label. label co-founder meinrad kneer is serving us something similar with this new album.

together with the german, but utrecht based flutist mark alban lotz, the bassist organized a series of meetings under the title 'u-ex(perimental)’ with interesting fellow improvisers at the utrecht sju jazzpodium. the duo expanded into trio or quartet by inviting one or more guests.

the pair recorded in two sessions (in december 2009 and february 2010) in the 'phunky pheasant studios’ in amsterdam. invited guests were welcome to join, though there was a limitation: the small space couldn’t handle a drum set, and the piano did not live up to the requested standard. this doesn’t imply, that there was little room for rhythm in the improvisations. kneer and lotz are musicians who have a strong rhythmic component to their playing, despite the nature of their instruments.

in some of their guests they find that same preference, as in "punch", where han buhrs proves his percussive vocal abilities. the duo suggests a pulse in 'operation hercules', where saxophonist yedo gibson thrives on. the 25 short improvisations show a wide range of improvisational tactics and techniques. the rhythmic approach is one of them, but also the painting of mysterious spheres (such as 'block 3', with subtle electronics by koenraad ecker) and the creation of audio stories ("beach life" with the lap steel guitar joost buis) is demonstrated.

through the compact size of the pieces and the responsiveness of the participants, each track works out perfectly and doesn’t get lost in endlessly spun out improvisational quests, without beginning or end. within limitation the masters proof themselves, because i suspect, that there is a lot more of recorded material. now there are 54 minutes of high-class improvisation, which doesn’t bore for one moment.

between 2007 and 2011 flutist mark alban lotz and bassist meinrad kneer organized about 120 concerts, together with free improvising musicians of the dutch and as well the international scene. in order to document their work, they met in 2011 in a small studio with some of the musicians, whom they had played with over the years. in this cast of guest musicians (a total of eleven) already established figures appear, along with some newcomers in the dutch free improvised music scene. those who failed to participate were drummers and pianists, because the small size of the studio did not allow their instruments or they were not available there. the result, which appears under the title of u-ex(perimental), contains 26 tracks with a total duration of 54 minutes, in which the thirteen participants are improvising in different formations, which range from duets of the two hosts (which open and close the recording), to sextet.

the track sequence on the cd is certainly striking. in the beginning, after a series of unidiomatic improvisations, the impression arises, that it doesn’t go beyond being a small catalogue of games, recorded purely for documentation. however, once you past the first third of the recording, there are a number of pieces that break that certain monotony. "punch" features the voice of han buhrs, while "inside", with guillaume heurtebize’s and alfredo genovesi’s guitars, show very interesting moments. in the brief "blitzfish" the latter guitarist, singer jodi gilbert and the two hosts reach a moment of great intensity.

it turns out to be extremely interesting to witness the recording passing from there, from cold abstraction to concreteness, showing very varied music, that moves through moments of agitation, descriptiveness, ambient and even shows a certain canonical character. how true is it that the important thing is not how you start, but how you finish!
