joost buis (badhoevedorp 1966) through euphonium and trombone lessons in music school, 10 years in the local postmen brassband, playing bass guitar in the school band and most of all some years of improvisation workshops in his hometown, trombonist and composer joost buis ended up playing improvised music.
he studied classical trombone and music theory on the arnhem conservatory. in 2000 he had lessons from trombonist roswell rudd.
joost buis organised a number of projects under his own name: the (big) buisband, suite wasserfarben (music for the opening of a joseph beuys exposition), the buiscomplex (a 20-piece orchestra), the brummelodics, and the trio snap, crackle & pop.
at the moment he is active with three groups: astronotes, the joost buis tentet (following a composition assignment for the 2006 north sea jazzfestival) and sliphorn (a quartet with paul pallesen, ernst glerum and han bennink). in 2003 he released an astronotes cd with which was very well received. in 2006 astronotes toured canada. joost buis played with the following groups/projects: the guus janssen septet, corrie en de brokken, the willem breuker collective, sean bergin & mob, palinckx, de operas noach en hier° of guus janssen, the new cool collective bigband (benjamin herman), the ab baars quartet, krang, the ex orkest, theatre projects with companies orkater, ‘t barre land en bonheur, bite the gnatze (paul pallesen) and a series of literary concerts of corrie van binsbergen (with toon tellegen, remco campert and kees van kooten).
he occasionally played with michael moore, misha mengelberg (icp), george lewis, jeb bishop and roswell rudd.
since a couple of years joost buis plays the lap steel guitar as a second instrument in several groups.
in 2007 joost buis was the curator of the european trytone festival.
