biliana voutchkova is a classically-trained violinist-vocalist-composer-free-improviser, who describes beautifully her art in a short poem:

…my house is this huge wide
    land of music,
    with many rooms and many
    open spaces,
    with comforting cozy beds of
    notes to rest on,
    with cushy pillows of
    silence all over,
with slow showers of sounds to
    soak my body in,
with boiling tea pots at dark
    corners seducing me
with their lovely melodies to sip from
    their complex, but simple pleasure,
with loooo-oo-ong corridors of everlasting drowns
    where entering eternity
    comes natural...
there, in that house, i live my
    exuberant life...

voutchkova comes from a family of bulgarian musicians, spent 14 years studying in the united states, where she expanded her interests in contemporary music and improvisation, and now resides in berlin. she performs new works by contemporary composers for violin, often written specially for her, and works with performances work, reaching into the realm of dance and movements. she has collaborated with many innovative ensembles as ensemble modern, solistenensemble kaleidoskop, zeitkratzer and the composers-improvisers splitter orchestra, co-founded her dance-music groups grapeshade and osm (open sound & movement collective) and performs regularly with clarinet player michael thieke (the duo released already there, flexion records, 2013).
for many years voutchkova refused to release any of her improvisations, “believing that the live experience is so strong and vivid that it can never be recreated by a recording”. but on the summer of 2015 she was invited to a residency in the swiss alps, where she enjoyed enough free time to think about her work and how she would like to continue. being in nature all day also contributed to her decision to channel this creative energy and inspiration into a recording of playing solo constantly for about three hours, later edited down to the modus of raw.

each of eight pieces suggests distinct ideas and sonic territory, all focused on her constant investigation on expanding the sonic possibilities of the violin while using an array of commanding, extended techniques, with her expressive voice. voutchkova's art is totally personal, uncompromising, embraces chaos and weird, raw sounds and immediately gravitates for the most wildest terrains, but on the same time it is totally captivating with its great sense of invention and poetic playfulness. she moves freely from a disturbing drone, explored on the title-piece, to the twisted, layered melodies of the tensed and dramatic “songs of anxiety”, to a hyperactive blending of colliding bowing techniques on “memory imprints” and sketching abstract sounds on exotic-sounding “chaos & beauty”.

the last two extended pieces offer more varied improvised strategies. “gratitudes and sorrows” borrows techniques and ideas from the rich legacy of norwegian hardanger fiddle, but juggles with the overtones and overlapping sounds in a complete different manner. voutchkova fuses these sounds into a series of intense, strange-sounding yet equally-tempting shamanic dances. “poschiavo medley”, after the swiss alpine town where she resided, weaves gently the local sounds of the city and nearby nature into a playful soundscpae where voutchkova’s violin and voice attempt to assimilate with the winds, bird calls, church bells, patiently coloring and morphing the peaceful scenery with imaginative, new sounds and songs.

Bulgarian violinist Biliana Voutchkova is probably more known in classical avant-garde circles than among the readers of this blog, but she shouldn't. In fact, again we can credit a free improv label such as Evil Rabbit to present us music coming from a different background. Voutchkova started playing the violin at the age of four, and accumulated all the classical awards that go with the training towards virtuoso level, releasing her first album at the age of sixteen.

On "Modus Of Raw", she shows her skills on the instrument, but after having unlearned all the key automatisms of the training. Her playing is unlyrical, not here to please, not here to bring what you expect, but offering a deeper, more vulnerable quality. The voice on her instrument is soft and wooden, resonating in multiple strings multiphonics, sometimes moving, sometimes hypnotic. She is so far away from classical violin that it's hard to describe the music, which is uniquely her own, offering an immediacy of experience that is further enhanced by her spontaneous singing that once in a while accompanies her instrument. The music is raw and pure at the same time, trying to catch the paradoxes that underly authentic emotions, suggested by titles such as "Chaos & Beauty", "Gratitude & Sorrows", "Songs of Anxiety".

    A strong album.

most releases of this dutch label have – no surprise - a link with holland. concerning these two new releases however the link with holland seems absent. (…)
'modes of raw' is another piece of cake, with a title that
made me instantly very curious. and jesus, this one goes directly to your soul! vibrating music from violinist and vocalist voutchkova, an unknown musician for me. because she combines violin and vocals, i immediately had to think of iva bittova. the more as both musicians integrate theatrical aspects in their work. but voutchkova takes us to other, more extreme territories. she
studied classical violin and became during this period engaged in improvised and modern music in new york. she is involved in several projects, duos (with michael thieke) and trios (with ernesto rodriguez and micha rabuske), some with a theatre or performance component, for example pedesis, a trio with markus personen (guitar) and tom arthurs (trumpet), who we met recently in a duo with pianist simon vincent. 'modus of raw' is the first solo statement of voutchkova and it is a very outspoken and personal statement, which was prepared and recorded in the swiss alps.
radical music as the title of the album suggests. in seven improvisations voutchkova unfolds a world of very physical, uncompromising, improvisations. abstract but also very expressive and dramatic, with lots of energy concentrated in each movement. the timbres, sound and colours she creates on her violin are of a baffling beauty!

nizozemský nezávislý label evil rabbit records založili v roce 2006 pianista albert van veenendaal a kontrabasista meinrad kneer, oba významní hráči na poli avantgardního jazzu a volné improvizace. tedy label nonkonformních muzikantů pro nonkonformní muzikanty. cd odtud se vyznačují nápaditým designem; nyní je to obal z černého kartónu s otvory pro barevná odlišení titulů, jež jsou součástí vložených jednostranných bookletů. znamená to zároveň vítané snížení nákladů, nutné pro takový typ vydavatelství…

nedávno vyšly dva pozoruhodné tituly, každý z opačného pólu jazzové avantgardy. pod pořadovým číslem 23 spatřilo světlo světa živé album the core tria s hostujícím matthewem shippem a jako 24 sólová studiová nahrávka biliany voutchkovy. první položka představuje free-jazzovou improvizaci, vycházející víceméně z tradičních idiomů, ta druhá absolutně volnou neidiomatickou improvizaci, bořící všechna pravidla. zároveň obě alba reprezentují to nejlepší z obou tvůrčích přístupů…

    (…)

úžasným způsobem pracuje s proměnlivou dynamikou (nejvýrazněji v titulní skladbě), využívá minimalistických repetic, ale přece jenom hrubě rozlámaných ("songs of anxiety"), neštítí se hororově mechanických zvuků jakéhosi perpetua mobile ("chaos & beauty") a dokonce inspirace v irských melodických konotacích, byť drsně zašpiněných…

the bulgarian born bv works in berlin where she is in many ways typical of the experimental scene where the music takes place in clubs as well as homes. her solo record is a sensation. the tone in her violin is full and as she opens with flageolets over a flux of sounds , she is one with her instrument. and thus i have said that she is not one of the musicians in berlin to have "alienated" her instrument. this is totally violin sound. and her music shows patterns that are traded in the history of solo violin.
the crux is though that she made it sound very different. the leaps are there, the natural use of the bow, the will to mix staccato and legato, but it is as though she succeeded in melting it all into something different and new. she chews the notes in the same way as the trombone player günter christmas. she expands the sound and mixes it with her voice , not to achieve polyphonic sound, but to achieve a sharper sound from the strings.
she is not one of those either who turns analog music into a sound of electronics. but she has indeed listened to other instruments. do i hear the minimalism of such players as evan parker when she puts the mute on the violin and lets the bow dance over the strings ? you can clearly hear her mixing classical tradition with the most subtle improv.
i think that bv and her violin improvisations are today 's answer of what improv achieved several years ago, a peak in this art. she answers, and at a distance she is full of her own references.
and indeed this is a glimmering performance, one of the most personal and beautiful albums i have heard in a very long time. a solo performance carried by necessity. this will be a classic album…

  • andrzej nowak, 4 november 2016, trybuna muzyki spontanicznej

czas i miejsce zdarzenia: poschiavo, szwajcaria, u podnóża alp. lipiec 2015r. trzytygodniowa rezydencja.

człowiek i instrumenty: biliana votchkova, skrzypce i głos.

very impressed by modus of raw (evil rabbit records err 24), the first solo record by the violinist biliana voutchkova. she has surfaced before in small group collaborations, for instance with michael thieke in 2013, and with viola player ernesto rodrigues and the woodwinds player micha rabuske in 2015. she's played with an impressive number of international musicians, including free improvisers, but this solo approach is clearly an area where she thrives. the press call it a "highly individual musical language", which is true, but there's also a strong sense of emotional strength, of independence; she doesn't need others, and might be happy speaking into the void. the void in this case was a studio in switzerland; she recorded the set herself, and proceeds with utter conviction, nothing distracting her from her pursuit of her elusive quarry.
in terms of technique, a musician like voutchkova has nothing to prove to the world; a gifted child prodigy who's been playing since age four, she's already been through the classical repertoire thing during a distinguished career, involving awards, scholarships, residencies, and international travel. a long time in the usa; she now resides in berlin. i'd like to think she's moved to a higher plane already, by the time we tune into the sounds on modus of raw; transcending classical, composition, improvisation and other modes, to arrive at a completely unique way of playing. it seems to my superficial ears to be a rich combination of things – classical / improvised techniques and methods, a mixture of musical and non-musical sounds (drones, noise, melodies), and above all the development and articulation of her private language. sometimes she works away at a repeated phrase in a deliciously nagging manner, determined to reach some core of meaning, that might be hidden like a nut in a shell, prising it loose. she vocalises, too, by the way; her wordless and whispered extemporisations add a great deal to the performances, though this remains principally an uncategorisable violin record.
as to content and ideas, biliana voutchkova strikes me as one of those profound and insightful artists who deals in silence, precision of thought, and a taut compacted mode of expression; only these taut-lipped approaches are suitable for the complex content she's attempting to delineate, where there are clearly a lot of unknowns, and you need a degree of courage to get to the heart of the matter in these dark truths. titles like 'songs of anxiety', 'memory imprints' and 'chaos & beauty' may give use a glimpse into what she's driving at, but listen to the powerful, abstract elusiveness of the music and be guided where she leads us, if you can follow. take a long hard look at some unknown corners of the world, and savour the fragile beauty of biliana voutchkova's strange music.
